A Vacation Memory Not Down the Toilet - Chicago

As we learned yesterday, Pigtails says the Omaha Zoo never happened.

So I jumped forward to a more recent trip to Chicago.  We honked vuvuzelas at friends running the marathon.  I decided it's better to watch a 'thon than race it, hands clasping a powdered Dunkin' Donut and coffee rather than a sweaty GU pack and Gatorade.

Girl tells me she remembers the Chi-Town trip, so yippee, a vacation memory not down the toilet!

Chicago River and Michigan Ave. in October

No go, that's why she collected a million of those little cards with the pictures of the American Girl dolls (see her hands)

Amazing churches downtown, just a block or two off the main drag.

Walking the town with no destination in mind is best

I'm pretty sure the Congress Hotel there in the background has bed bugs

String Bean beneath The Bean, flip the camera to manual focus next time

Playing in art that spits

I wonder how you get selected to have a film of your lips and nose projected up on the giant glass blocks?

Privacy, please.

Explore the side streets and you'll stumble upon old architecture

We hit the Windy City three times in the last five years.  She's 7 in the shot above, 8 below.

Grand Central Station.  No reason to pay someone to take photos.  DIY, FTW.

Chicago is played out, I'm done, let's go somewhere else this summer.

    1. Disney is in the running this summer. I went there as a kid and again on my honeymoon, so really don't have any desire to return. But am considering for the brat's sake.

  2. Love that last photo of Pigtails. The one with the architecture is great, too. She looks like she's enjoyed these trips immensely.

    1. Agree on the last photo, I printed an 8x10 at Walgreens and framed it.

Pigtails enjoys our trips, SHE'D BETTER REMEMBER THEM WHEN SHE'S MY AGE.

    1. I suspect a trip to NYC would be 85% the same as Chicago. Probably a good place to take her as a teen, will add it to my list.

  4. Well of course she'll remember this one seeing she's older than 2:) Lovely pics and can see why you call her pigtails .. she looks awfully cute in her pigtails ! I agree with Cari ! Disney ... however many times you go , there's always something new there ! Anyway.. sure you'll pick the right spot. Going to Chicago during spring break .. so will steal these spot ideas !

    1. I'm surprised how many vacations have been lost down her memory drain post age 5. Maybe she was so bored on the trips that memory loss was her body's only way of coping.

  5. Chicago is one of our favorites. We have been several times and Pat has taken each boy when they turn 6 for a "guys weekend". Great time, but it looks like you have "been there, done that". There are lots of great places in the midwest if you want to stay close to home. We also love St. Louis, Minneapolis and another great memory for us was hiking in the Smokey Mountains. Lots of great trails. You will find a good place!

    1. Taking the train to Chicago is the way to go. Has your family traveled by rail?

Smokey Mountain hiking, now you are talking. I'll add it to my list!

    2. We haven't done the train, but I would like to try it. We actually hit the Smokey Mountains on the way to our destination of Myrtle Beach. 1st day leg took us to Louisville and 2nd day driving, we took a break while driving through the Smokies. I would have liked to have stayed longer, but took a nice hike and discovered there are TONS of trails with beautiful views, lots of waterfalls (a personal favorite of mine). We even saw several bears - from a distance. It is still a second place to our trip to Yellowstone, but both were great!

    3. Both the Smokey Mountains and Myrtle Beach are worth a visit, I traveled there on separate vacations growing up. Myrtle Beach was one of my favorites, we camped just off the beach and walked a few paces to swim in the Atlantic all day. Good times!
